Project Positivity

Domestic Abuse WA12 are an organisation in Newton who support families fleeing domestic abuse. They also have a Food Hub which supports local families and prevents food waste.

The best things about the project were helping the community and working with an artist and being able to be creative.

The young people were passionate about encouraging people to reduce food waste, reuse and recycle, so with eco-artist Hattie Kongaunruan they created campaign banners with key sustainability messages. The group also created garden ornaments for their community garden. They researched where in the world our food comes from, transferring this onto a large projected world map. They shared why the Food Hub is so important, made Elegant Corpses and Garden Guardians from recycled plastics, pulped paper into fruit ornaments, made natural paints, name plates and bunting. Hattie guided the group through environmentally sound processes such as creating wheat paste as an alternative to glue– a tradition coined by protest artists who fight for sustainability through awareness raising.

I’ve really enjoyed today!
